The fair and a shadow

Today Matt took the afternoon off from work. I didn't go in to tutor. And Zachariah skipped his afternoon nap. We all had to sacrifice something. HA! We went to our county fair. It was a super hot day. The temperature was around 95, with the humidity it felt like 100. And then the sun was beating down on us the whole time. But we still spent a few hours there visiting all the animals in the barns, then going to the petting zoo, seeing tractors and other things on display, eating, taking a pony ride, getting ice cream, and then heading home. It was a lot of fun. And although you won't see any smiles from Zachariah, he really did have fun. I just laugh at him sometimes, because he can be so serious. You can just tell that he's taking everything in and really enjoying it, but he won't smile. He just concentrates too hard. Then once in a while he'll giggle (the camel made him giggle). What a nice afternoon with my family.

Apparently all the sheep wanted to see Zachariah when we were walking by. He loved that he could reach out and touch the animals. We also visited the goats, cows, more cows, chickens, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, and more.

Then of course we had to stop to see the tractors. Zachariah's favorites are the antique tractors. His eyes get huge and he says "rrrm rrrm". As you can see in this picture he's trying to figure out how to start it.

They had some really exotic animals at the petting zoo. This little camel was very friendly. He seemed really interested in us. Zachariah liked petting his head. And then when Matt turned around, the camel tried to eat Zac's arm. He just put his lips on him, but it was funny. Zachariah gave Matt and funny look, and I just burst out laughing. And as usual, Zachariah is not satisfied until he can pet (or hug if possible) every animal within his reach.

Matt took Zachariah for his first pony ride. He loved it (again no smiling). By the time he got off the pony and I asked him about it he was really smiling. I could tell he loved it.

Then we rested when we got home. We were very hot and thankful to be cooling off in the air conditioning. I couldn't figure out why Zachariah was peeking out this window then ducking down really fast. I watched him do it a few times. I thought he was just being silly playing peek-a-boo. He was really giggling too. Then when I looked over there, I saw why. He just discovered his shadow. He figured out pretty quickly that it moved when he did. He touched it carefully. Then stared at it. And finally he waved at it and walked away. So cute!

I love love love the tractor pic. He looks so adorable on that giant tractor!

Second, I saw the last pic before I read the explanation, and I thought he was crouched down in front of the a/c vent!

Sounds like fun! Jay and I are debating about whether to hit our fair tomorrow... it's risky given CJ's recent aversion to loud noises and crowds, but then again it's something to do...

That shadow photo is really terrific. Sounds like a fun day. I'm too much of a wimp to be outside for more than five minutes!
